Well it has been quite an eventful few months. Warner Bros publicity department were able to take full advantage of my visit to Spain. They dubbed it a "goodwill visit". But that was neither the case. From the moment I stepped onto Spanish soil, there were troubles. First the rumour began that I was to give $1 million dollars to the Loyalists cause. Completely untrue! This was fabricated by Erben and I just laughingly went along with it. I never thought an off-handed comment would turn into a firestorm.

After Lili left, we reached Madrid. Erben and I continued in our journey. I played the part of "war correspondent", but I found that title to be quite unflattering. I took notes and posed for pictures but that was all of my correspondence.

We stayed at the Hotel Gran Via where we met Ernest Hemingway. He was quite a gruff gent. Only talking about virtues of revolution and such. I cared for none of that mess. I did find myself to be injured in the process. Silly it is, a piece of plaster fell on my head. As you might have heard I was shot, another false statement. But of course the story circulated around that I had been killed. Lili had to send a telegram stating that was indeed untrue.

I left Spain in a midnight flight, hoping to escape to brewing war. I found this trip has done much to destroy my reputation. Even the Photoplay article I penned, What Really Happened to Me in Spain, was turned around to make me look like a frivolous playboy with absolutely no moral fiber whatsoever. I am quite appalled with everything from Lili's possessiveness to Erben's strange actions during the trip. I have only deep regret for all that has happened in the past three months.

So I decided to go to Spain with Hermann. Jack Warner had a shit-fit. This led to numerous telegrams from him to me that went unanswered. He said he had grown tired of my laziness, lateness on the set and embellished illnesses. I told him I'll send a postcard from Paris.

We are in Cherbourg now and the trip here was quite uneventful. I did have the uneasy feeling that something was afoot with Hermann. Aboard the Queen Mary, he would disappear for the longest time and not resurface until the next morning. I knew something strange was going on but every time I tried to inquire, Hermann would say it was nothing. I can't tell you the happiness I feel right now that I'm away from Lili for even a little bit. We plan to meet up with her in Paris in a few weeks, until then I shall enjoy the pleasures of Europe.

My friend Hermann Erben came to Hollywood this week. He has been a welcomed sight. Sometimes I feel so lonely within the community here at Warners and Hollywood in general. It is good for once to see a friendly face. Well anyway the two of us have made plans to go to Spain. As you all have known, there's a civil war there at the moment. Hermann believes this is the best adventure we could experience. He's calling it a "journalistic endeavor". I am a little trepid about going there though and Lili has announced she wants to come along too. I have yet to tell Jack Warner about this, because I know he will forbid me to leave. So I plan to telegram him from the Queen Mary.

Oh well what's life without a little adventure?

Finally!! The long awaited and much talked about Beam Ends has been released. The reviews have been kind. I must admit, I'm quite taken aback when anyone mentions a good word about the book. For as much confidence as I seem to project, I am in reality, a shy and modest man. The public's support of the book is overwhelming too. The Warners mail room has been flooded with requests for signed copies, which I am very much obliged to give (even though it has cost me money out of my own pocket to send them out).

[ mood | crappy ]

I really find myself in quite the shitty mood lately. I was interviewed by the reporter, W.C. Oliver about how I have felt and I let all my emotions out on the table. I often think about leaving Hollywood and going to explore somewhere far-off land in search of real adventure. My soul yearns for the mellow peace of the Pacific or the lights of Hong Kong. I am bored with life in California. My problems even reach to the set. I feel typecasted everytime I step in front of the cameras. I desire to play comedies, something Warners would never dream of letting me portray. I hate Hollywood and the fast-paced lifestyle. You are being hustled all the time. I like to live in places where you can get the long view of things. Even my writing has suffered. I don't get a chance to work out my ideas, they always come out confused in this place.

So much for happiness in the new year.

Well it's about bloody time I updated, isn't it?

The holidays passed without Lili and I getting into an agrument. We actually had a good time spending the days aboard the yacht. It was nice to take a break from filming for a while.

Now it's off to studio again with The Prince and the Pauper. I have the small role of Miles Hendon. It's not too bad, I fancy the idea of being another fighter for justice. It should be interesting to work with Claude again. We have a devil of time when the two of us are on set together.

Well Warner Bros has been kind enough to let me have some time off for the holidays. Lili and I will be spending some quite time at home. As I look back at '36, it has been a hell of a ride. I am most proud of finishing of my novel, Beam Ends. I hope to have that out in early 1937, so keep your eyes out for that. I promise to send each of you an autographed copy.

So best wishes, have a merry Christmas and plenty of New Year's cheer!

So what do you get your wife, whom you cheat on and all in all completely ignore? How about a bottle of gin? John suggested it. But I know with a present like that, it will only end up being thrown at my head.

Another Dawn has finished filming. I believe Kay Francis will be pleased not to see me again. Now my next project, which I'm reading the script now, is The Prince and the Pauper. It sounds quite exciting, though my role is small. I still haven't heard back about the Robin Hood role. I will keep my fingers crossed on that.

Well despite all the things Lili and I have went through, she still wants to try and work things out. *laughs* She's either incredibly in love with me or incredibly crazy.

Given my time between films, I have started to write a novel Beam Ends. It is a fictionalized account about my travels with my friends aboard the Sirocco from Australia to New Guinea. I am quite pleased with how it is turning out so far. Hopefully the novel will see publishing in early 1937.

Filming on Another Dawn is nearly complete too. Kay Francis.. what can I say? She has a slight speech impediment and has often be referred to as "the wavishing Kay Fwancis". This has led to a little teasing on the set. Once she heard me and the stage hands talking and ran away in tears. Yes, I'm an ass. Sometimes my joking goes a little too far, you could just ask Olivia de Haviland about that.

There's rumors about a new film next year..The Adventures of Robin Hood. So who thinks I would be good in that role?

Whenever Lili wants to upset me, she mentions my mother. That woman was no mother to me, she was nothing but a cu...(I'll refrain from saying it since there are ladies present). Once again we were in a huge shouting match last night. What was it about? I, no longer know anymore. Lili has become increasingly jealous and will fly off the handle for no apparent reason now. Last night she went off again on one of her tantrums. I kept telling her to shut up, especially since Hedda Hopper lives next door. She becomes more aggravated at my lack of concern and throws a glass at my head, missing my face by mere inches. I came towards her, (she was now laughing) grabbed her arm and slapped her in the face. She said nothing to me and I left. I spent the night drinking at The Hollywood Roosevelt. I'll probably be there again tonight.

Needless to say, I never reported for work on the Warners lot today. I heard a couple people were out looking for me. It doesn't matter, I really don't give a shit now.

Filming for Green Light has concluded. I am glad to be finished with the role of Dr. Paige. I resented the fact the studio chose to put me in such a lackluster part. It was not the greatest of roles, but I was determined to play it to the best of my abilities. Now that filming is completed, I have put it all in my past. I have just received word about a new script, Another Dawn. This role is not as promising either. I believe the studio is just handing me roles so my name can stay up in the lights. I hope they know what they are doing. I will be co-starring alongside Kay Francis, whom I have never worked with before. I don't know much about her, other than she's famous for starring in the weepies.

{On this date in 1959, Errol Flynn died of a heart attack. He was only 50 years old. Though he did died at an early age, Errol packed a lot of living in those years. He was a notorious womanizer, hard drinker and all around prankster. So where ever you are at today, raise a toast in honor of dear Errol.}

Lili and I had a fight last night, which led to me storming out of the house. I spent the rest of the night drinking and playing cards with Niv and John. I can't say I blame her, but she knew what type of man I was when she married me. We both know this isn't a marriage of love but rather a move to boost my career. Yes, I do feel attracted to her, but I can't help to have a wandering eye for the ladies. I feel like this is never going to work. I would divorce her, but I was informed by the studio head, Jack Warner, it would be suicide to my film career. Jack had told me, "Errol, what type of image is that going to give to the public? I don't care if you're happy or not. Goddamn it you're an actor, at least act the part. Make the public believe you're a happily married man!"

I suppose that puts an end to that...for now.

Lili and I talked it over. I will be playing the part in Green Light. I'm not too overly excited by it. Like I said earlier, I don't really like the part. But Lily said the most important factor is to get my face out in the public eye. That's one thing I can't disagree with her on that. So I will begin filming in one week.

Well filming of The Charge of the Light Brigade wrapped up two weeks ago. Since then I haven't really done anything but relax onboard Sirocco. It's the one pleasure I can have in life where no one will bother me. Though when I came ashore, Jack Warner was mightly angry. He spent the past two weeks trying to find me so I could read over the new script. It's called Green Light. I'm really not at all pleased by it. My forte is more the swashbuckler and I'm happy playing those parts. Though I do realize I should extend my talents outside that genre or risk being typecasted.

Anyway here was the plot summary of Green Light....

Dr. Newell Paige is a dedicated surgeon and physician who is devoted to his patients and to the ethics of his profession. Covering for his mentor, Dr. Endicott, who is consumed by personal problems, Paige operates on a wealthy donor to the hospital, Mrs. Dexter. However, Dr. Endicott rushes in at the last moment and in his haste botches the surgery. Mrs. Dexter dies. An inquiry ensues and Dr. Endicott refuses to take or pass blame. The presumption of guilt then falls on Dr. Paige, who resigns rather than blame his mentor. By accident, Paige meets and falls in love with Mrs. Dexter's daughter Phyllis. When they each learn the other's true identity, Paige leaves rather than cause Phyllis pain, since she blames him for her mother's death. Paige travels to a rural settlement to join his friend Dr. Stafford in a dangerous experiment intended to eradicate spotted fever, which has decimated the local population. Influenced by the religious and ethical expoundings of church dean Harcourt, Paige risks his life in hopes of giving something of value to mankind.

Ah yes, I see the end is near for this shooting of this film. Final filming wraps up in a week. I might throw a party for everyone. Sort of as an end of summer get together, you all are invited of course.

I have never seen so many accidents on one set in my few years in Hollywood. Sadly, I have to report that one of the stunt-men has come to the most unfortunate of ends. In the charge scene, the poor chap fell off the horse and directly onto a broken sword. And as luck would have it, the sword was sticking straight up from the ground. It is very tragic indeed. I'm just glad Olivia didn't personally witness the event.

We have also had problems with the horses. The bloody things keep dying on the set. Broken legs and all, there is no hope for them. So of course you know what happens next. Last I heard over 200 were lost.

Though throughout all the tragedies, there have been good times. My good friend, David Niven, has been spreading this story around. So I might as well tell it too. One day on the set, I was on horseback with a mirror fixing my makeup. One of extras, Joe, decides it would be funny to hit the horse in the ass with the lance. The horse bucked and I was thrown to the ground. The crew was in hysterics. I picked my self up and demanded to know who did it. Joe wanted to let everyone it was him and take the credit. So he volunteered. I proceeded to drag him from his horse and give him a swift beating. Which only made the crew laugh harder. Of course being the nice guy I am, I took the fellow out for the beer that night. Now we've become the fastest of friends, picking on unsuspecting members of the cast and crew for the occasional practice joke. This is much to the dismay of poor Olivia.

Well that is all for now. See you in a week.

And before I forget, happy belated birthday to Gene!

So I am checking in to let you all know I'm still alive and well. I have spent the last three weeks in southern California filming scenes for The Charge of the Light Brigade. It has been hellish to say the least. To make matters worse, wearing these uncomfortable wool costumes in the middle of summer has not been fun at all. Though I have to say working with Miss Olivia has certainly made this experience a bit more bearable. She is a fantastic lady. Well that is all for now. I don't know when I'll update again, but hopefully it will be soon.

Has it been such a long time since I updated? I can't remember. I put all the blame on John Barrymore. See I don't know if you had noticed, but my birthday was on June 20. So we have been around the town ever since! I was suppose to be reading my script for The Charge of the Light Brigade. But hell I have not had the time. It's all right though filming only begins in 6 days. That is plenty of time.

So what are the plans for Fourth of July today? Can you believe I actually received an invite to Basil's for a "backyard barbecue". I nearly laughed myself hysterical. Basil keeps mentioning it will be quite "divine". I have my own doubts. I just cannot see that Englishman over the grill cooking burgers. Ha! I think I shall go just for the laughs.
